Jacking In: A Series on Cyberspace Literacy presents
ACTIVISM ONLINE: Global Communications at PeaceNet, EcoNet, LaborNet,
and ConflictNet
"Throughout history, channels of communication have played instrumental
roles in exacerbating tensions. Today the media of communication face the
challenge of how to promote peace, build confidence among nations and
peoples, and strengthen understanding. Accelerated by the rapid advances
in electronic technologies, global information relations have become
central to international relations in general."
So begins Howard Frederick's *Global Communication & International
Relations*. Although *Global Communications* treats all worldwide media
from historical and theoretical perspectives, the focus tonight
will be on the use of computer-mediated communications to achieve these ends.
Howard Frederick and Michael Stein will both be on hand to demonstrate the IGC
networks -- PeaceNet, EcoNet, LaborNet, and ConflictNet -- and to offer
strategies for online activism.
Sunday, Aug 8, 7:30 p.m.
